HERBALIST PERSPECTIVE
CRAMP RELIEFWhen menstrual cramps cause great distress, this formula can't be beat. Cramp Relief can also be helpful for stomach and leg cramps.
~ Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa): was first used by Native Americans for "female complaints" including hormonal and nervous system imbalances, painful periods and fibroid cysts. Black Cohosh contains a phytoestrogen, which helps regulate estrogen production and is helpful for conditions caused by low estrogen levels including depression, palpitations, vaginal dryness, headaches, and other PMS symptoms. It raises the body's energy lifting prolapses, and contains anti-spasmodic properties making it useful for uterine and other cramps, neuralgia, arthritis, heavy limbs and nervous conditions.
~ Cramp Bark (Viburnum opulus): is an antispasmodic, astringent, nervine for voluntary and involuntary muscles. It is useful for gastrointestinal, skeletal and genitourinary muscle spasms. Cramp Bark is helpful for spasmodic pain, i.e. pelvic/uterus menstrual pain and uterine contractions and related nausea, pain extending down the thighs and back pain. It is also helpful for restless leg syndromes. This herb contains anti-inflammatory properties as well. It is a sedative to the uterus and is also helpful for uterine prolapse.
~ Cypress Root (Cypress spp.): reduces constrained qi or energy causing painful periods. It also can relieve related moodiness and depression.
~ Black Haw (Viburnum prunefolium): is an antispasmodic herb with properties similar to Cramp Bark (see above). It is most often used for painful periods, low back pain during menstruation, and clotting. It also increases scanty menstrual flow.
~ Valerian Root (Valeriana spp.): is a strong relaxing nervine especially with emotional stress, anxiety, irritation, restlessness, palpitations, backaches, and muscle spasms. It is very helpful for painful menstruation. (DO NOT take with barbiturates).
~ Wild Ginger (Asarum Canadensis): is helpful for blood circulation to the uterus and for crampy slow starting menses. It is an aromatic carminative, helpful for stomach distress.
~Peony Root (Paeonia lactiflorae): alleviates abdominal and muscle pain and spasms, tension, cramps. It also relieves spontaneous sweating and nourishes the blood.
~ Peppermint Essential Oil: promotes menstruation.
~ Chamomile Flower Essence: brings emotional balance to those who are easily upset and unable to release emotional tension.
~ Lavender Flower Essence: restores body and emotions when depleted by nervousness and overstimulation.
~ Rescue Remedy Flower Essence: brings inner calm and stability in times of stress, distress, trauma and emergency.
~ Scleranthus Flower Essence: balances fluctuating moods and body functions. This information is not meant to be used to diagnose or treat disease. If you are pregnant or have a disease, consult with your healthcare practitioner before using any herbal combination.
